If two explanations both fit, the useful question is which one predicts something the other does not.

There is a second half to this that has not been said yet. It helps to say which part of this you are uncertain about. A precise question gets a precise answer; a general one gets everybody’s favourite anecdote.

Adding the numbers, since they settle part of this. Say what you would expect to see if you were wrong, before you look. It is a small discipline and it changes what you notice.

Ask again with the specifics and you will get a better answer than this one.

One thing that is still open after LipidDoc_ATL’s answer:

How long did you give it before you decided it was working?

I read this differently from josh_phd_bmore, on substance rather than tone. Not convinced. The evidence being cited is consistent with the conclusion and also consistent with two other conclusions nobody has ruled out.

josh_phd_bmore has the substance of this right. The condition it depends on is worth stating. Yes, and the corollary is less popular: if the reasoning holds, it also holds where it produces an answer we do not like.
